Lets talk about this gorgeous gemstone.. First of all it is technically NOT a gemstone. Yes that’s right, this vibrant rock is really fossilized resin from extinct trees. Most of these trees are 40-60 million years old! Amber today is found in the Baltic regions. This includes Russia, Lithuania, Poland and several other countries considered part of the Baltics. Since it is really resin, it tends to contain whatever happened along before the resin had a chance to harden. This includes lots of different insects including spiders, flies, ants and any other poor creature that found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time!
Many legends are centered around Amber.
One says that The Greek god Apollo wept tears of amber when he was banished from Olympus. A more current legend says that if a man keeps a piece of amber with him he will never have issues with sexual impotence!

The Amber Room in Catherine the Great’s palace in Russia is totally lined and decorated with cut amber. It was installed in 1765 but sadly the amber was pillaged by the Nazis in World War 2 and then destroyed in a fire. Thankfully the room is now completely restored using newly cut amber. This room is described as the Eighth Wonder of the World. It features ornate amber panels on each wall.
Amber as Jewelry
Besides the beauty of this “gem” it also has another terrific feature for those of you who love long and dangling earrings. Amber is VERY lightweight. Purchase one of my designs and wear it. You will see immediately how lightweight they are! The color of these amber gems can range from deep orange/brown to lighter yellow. Every one of these hues is so beautiful. I hope you have enjoyed this overview of amber and decide to purchase some for your own jewelry collection.
