Are you ready to indulge yourself without the calories? Smoky quartz is the perfect choice. This gorgeous gem is part of the quartz family. That means it is hard to the touch. (7 on the Mohs Scale) It is easy to facet, creating a luminous gem. See the image below to get a feel for the faceted finished product. the gem at top is tiger eye. I love the way these gems complement each other.

a year ago I stumbled upon a trove of lovely faceted smoky quartz cabochons. They lingered in my gemstone collection for a few months before started working with them. Immediately I fell in love with this gem. I love that it presents so many design possibilities. The piece you see above features the ‘pointy’ side of the gem. I could have also chosen to design this by creating a large basket type bezel and flipping the gem so the flat faceted side was visible. I love both options

Another possibility is featuring this gem with a gem that enhances the design. So far I have used moonstone, tiger eye, picture jasper, amber and peridot. So many options.. so little time!

This iridescent and pearlescent gem has been revered for centuries. If you are a June baby you can claim this gem as your birthstone. Lucky June babies! This gem is predominately white but also can be grey or peach colored. Black inclusions can occur too. These inclusions are actually tourmaline. Personally I prefer the white version. Locations around the world mine this gem. A few of the more prominent are Scotland, India, Norway and Australia.

What I love about this gem is the play of colors in the light. Moonstone formation consists of micro fine lines at right angles to each other. They are rarely visible in the stone since the lines are so tiny. However these lines are what allow the light to reflect the color spectrum in the gem. This iridescence is called ‘schiller’ and it happens during the crystallization process.

Moonstone legends abound.

One of my favorites is from Ancient Rome. Romans believed that moonstone was actually a shard of solid moonlight. Furthermore if you glanced into the stone you would see the Goddess Diana. She then would grant you love and good fortune.

In India this gem is used as a tool to reach divine wisdom and clairvoyance. Moonstone is also a popular wedding gift in this culture. in many Arab cultures moonstone is considered to be a family stone. When worn by women it is believed to produce large numbers of children.

Moonstone is also revered as a tool for healing and as a protection for travelers.

Complementary Gems for jewelry designs

Since moonstone is milky white it essentially complements every gem. I adore using it in combination with turquoise, rainbow quartz, onyx, ruby zoisite and more. The pendant shown here is created using Lace Agate from Indonesia.

When designing with this gem I tend to spend time (sometimes as much as an hour) going over the options for a complementary gem. Not only does the combination of the two have to feel right to me, but the actual shape of the gems is a major consideration. Playing with the options is part of the fun of designing.

About 18 years ago I started playing around with jewelry design. I had a great business career but felt something missing. Once I got started in jewelry there was really no turning back. The passion I felt (and still do) for creating jewelry is hard to put into words. I adore finding new gems and learning about these gems and their history. Drooling over a new gem find is now part of my routine. learning about the different metals is fascinating as well. Each metal I work with; copper, silver sterling, steel and gold has it’s own set of properties. Working with them is challenging to say the least.

OK, that is a tiny snippet about my journey. The rest is contained in the book, of course! The journey I took from a business marketing career, which is creative in it’s own right, to this amazing place I am today is worth writing about. I feel that the steps I took can be helpful to anyone that has a fine life but realizes they have not tapped into some missing joy.

So Voila!. I wrote a book. I was guided by a professional who helped drag the emotions out of me and into the pages of the book.

Here are some of the guides offered.

–Discover the uniqueness of being a jewelry designer
-Appreciate and celebrate your creative personality
-Create your own passionate life
-Increase your powers of observation
-Examine the source of your inspiration
-Develop perspective that takes you far beyond your career
-Learn strategies for personal growth
-Master the eight steps to begin your own creative journey.

In Addition I have included details on my current collections. How did I create these collections? what is their meaning? This process is the most fun for me. Once I fall in love with a particular gem I delve into it’s history and find ideas for the formation of the collection. One of my favorite collections is ‘Slice of Moonlight’ which features moonstone. Moonstone is known for it’s pearly and opalescent features. Ancient Romans believed that this gem was actually a slice of solid moonlight! When worn this gem can bring us love and good fortune.

Finally I added a section that highlights the main gems I work with. I give information about each of the gems and include color photos . Below is shown two of my favorites.. Petrified Palmwood Root from Indonesia and Peruvian Opal.

An Icon We See Everywhere

Think of the heart shape. It’s everywhere—on greeting cards, emojis, and signs of love. But this simple image has a rich backstory that stretches back thousands of years. The heart as a symbol means more than just romance; it stands for emotion, spirit, and connection across many cultures.

I am drawn to the heart shape and use it in many of my jewelry designs. Of course the symbolism is part of the reason I love designing this way.

In this post, you’ll see how the heart shape took on new forms over time, why it matters, and what its story reveals about human culture.

Ancient Origins of Heart Imagery

Archaeologists have uncovered some fascinating traces of the heart in the ancient world:

Mesopotamia: Clay tablets from Sumer and Akkad show heart-shaped objects and script. Often, these images connect the heart to thought and wisdom instead of just the body.

Egypt: The heart had a starring role in Egyptian life and afterlife beliefs. Tomb art shows the heart being weighed against the feather of Ma’at, to test a person’s goodness.

Greece: Classical Greeks often sketched organs in detailed medical texts. The philosopher Aristotle saw the heart as the center of emotion, intelligence, and even courage. Heart images appear on ancient pottery and scrolls.

The Earring design below shows heart shaped malachite gems dangling from a copper hoop.

Malachite earrings done in Malachite, Sterling and Copper

Symbolic Meanings in Early Civilizations

To ancient people, the heart was much more than a part of the body. It carried rich symbolism:

Life and Vitality: The heart was seen as the spark of life. Without it, nothing moved or breathed.

The Soul and Identity: Egyptians believed the heart held a person’s soul, memories, and truth. In the afterlife, the heart acted like a record of your entire life—nothing escaped its memory.

Feelings and Spirit: The Greeks linked the heart to strong emotions. Love, grief, fear, and joy all flowed from the heart’s core.

Judgment and Morality: In ancient Egypt, the heart was weighed in the underworld. A heavy heart meant guilt and led to punishment. A light heart pointed to honesty and peace.

The Emergence of the Stylized Heart Shape in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, the heart shape took a new direction in art and culture. Instead of showing the human heart as a realistic organ, artists started drawing it as two rounded arches meeting at a sharp point. This is the same shape that later became a global symbol of love. The shift wasn’t only about art—it reflected new beliefs, social customs, and ways of seeing emotion.

Medieval Manuscripts and Religious Contexts

Medieval Europe brought a boom in decorated manuscripts and church art. Monks and scribes filled the margins of books with bright images, including the earliest recognizable heart shapes. These hearts often appeared in:

Illuminated Manuscripts: You can spot small heart shapes in the borders of prayer books or around saints and angels. The design stood out against the gold leaf and deep blues of the pages.

Religious Texts: Writers used the heart as a sign of true faith or divine love. For example, images sometimes showed saints holding stylized hearts, meant to represent their love for God or their pure intentions.

Church Decorations: Artists carved heart shapes into wood, painted them on altars, or added them to stained glass. In some stories, Jesus was shown pointing to his heart, calling attention to his compassion and suffering.

The heart shape didn’t just pop up by accident. Some historians say it may have been inspired by ancient plants or seeds, such as the silphium pod, which was shaped like a heart and connected to love and affection. The image above features the silphium pod. You can easily see how the upside down image of this pod mimics our modern day concept of the heart.

Modern Evolution of Heart Images

Heart images have taken on a new life in the last century, sweeping through pop culture and digital spaces at a pace no one could have predicted. They are no longer reserved for art and religion—now, hearts show up in slogans, billboards, text messages, and social posts worldwide. Let’s look at the key shifts that led to this, from paper cards to pixelated symbols.

The design below features another way I design using the heart motif. The fine silver backing is heart shaped and features a teardrop shaped turquoise gem.

Heart Designed Pendant from the Dare to Dream collection

Valentine’s Day and Mass Media: The Rise of the Heart in Pop Culture

With the boom of printing in the 19th and 20th centuries, the stylized heart started showing up everywhere. Nowhere is this more obvious than on Valentine’s Day cards, which took the simple heart shape and turned it into a sign of romance.

Why did this happen? Commercial printing made it cheap and easy to send messages of love. Heart images went from elite artworks to everyday objects you could buy at a corner store. By the early 1900s, heart-covered cards, candy boxes, and decorations took over store shelves each February.

Mass media only boosted this trend:

Advertising: Brands used hearts to connect a product with warmth, safety, or affection. Think of classic candy boxes, soda ads, or jewelry campaigns—the heart makes you feel an emotion before you read a single word.

Movies and TV: Scripted love stories splashed the heart symbol across posters and film reels. When a cartoon character’s eyes turned into hearts, kids and adults alike understood: love, in its silliest or purest form.

Pop Music and Art: Album covers, posters, and fashion added even bolder heart imagery. From punk rock pins to pop diva stage sets, the heart became a sign of emotion, rebellion, or joy.

The Digital Heart: From Emoji to Memes

In the last two decades, the heart image has exploded across digital screens in ways that old-school marketers could only dream about. It’s now one of the most recognized symbols on Earth—thanks to social platforms, messaging apps, and the ever-growing emoji lineup.

Here’s how digital life shaped the heart:

Emoji Hearts: The red heart emoji was added to phones and computers in the 2010s. It’s now used in billions of texts and posts every day. A single tap sends warmth or friendship across the globe—faster than a handwritten letter ever could.

Color Variations: Different colored hearts let people show subtle feelings or inside jokes. For example:

Red for love or strong emotion

Yellow for friendship or happiness

Blue for trust or calm vibes

Black for sadness, style, or dry humor

Heart Reactions: Social platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok made the heart a way to show approval. People “like” with a heart instead of a thumbs up, sending instant feedback and positive vibes.

Conclusion

The heart image has moved through history as both a mirror and a messenger—shifting its shape and meaning as people changed the way they loved, believed, and expressed themselves. From ancient carvings loaded with spiritual weight, to the decorative hearts in medieval stories, right up to today’s emoji-laden texts, this simple symbol still carries deep emotions. I expect this is why I tend to gravitate towards this icon in my designs. To me the heart means LOVE.

Ancient Origins of Cuff Bracelets

Cuff bracelets are some of the oldest jewelry designs dating back thousands of years. More than simple adornments, these bracelets often carried deep cultural, spiritual, and symbolic meanings. Ancient civilizations used them to express identity, status, and beliefs, and their designs offer a glimpse into the values of the societies that wore them.

Cuff Bracelets in Ancient Egypt

In ancient Egypt, cuff bracelets were masterpieces of craftsmanship and symbolism. To the Egyptians, wearing a cuff bracelet was akin to carrying a piece of the divine with them. They often used gold, which represented the eternal power of the gods, as their primary material. They combined this with vivid gemstones like turquoise, carnelian, amethyst and lapis lazuli, each holding unique spiritual significance. For example, turquoise was believed to bring protection and strength.

High-ranking officials, priests, and royals like Queen Nefertiti and King Tutankhamun wore elaborate cuffs adorned with motifs of scarabs, snakes, and lotus flowers. These designs often reflected themes of rebirth, immortality, and divine protection.

Cuffs in Ancient Greece

Greek cuffs were often simpler in design but no less meaningful. They focused on elegant metalwork with etched patterns, such as laurel leaves or geometric shapes. While Egyptians sought to symbolize immortality, the Greeks used their bracelets to represent victory, intellect, and beauty. Soldiers even wore metal cuffs as arm guards in battle, blending fashion with function.

Native American Cuffs

Among Native American tribes, cuffs hold deep meaning, representing cultural identity and skillful artistry. Navajo silversmiths, for example, are renowned for their silver cuffs inlaid with turquoise stones. Turquoise, known as the “sky stone,” is believed to bring protection, healing, and a connection to the earth. These bracelets often feature hand-carved designs of animals, arrowheads, and other symbols rooted in spiritual narratives. The cuff design below is one I created using copper and sterling silver. The butterfly component is textured and then antiqued. The turquoise gemstone in the center is reminiscent of many Native American designs.

The Cuff Bracelet Today

Today, cuff bracelets continue to evolve, reflecting modern tastes while honoring their historical roots. As a designer I am constantly finding new ways to create a cuff. Of course I love adding gemstones to the cuff but there are so many other ways to create these one of a kind treasures.

In the early days of my designing, I used a lot of copper. I loved that it was easy to work with and quite affordable. It gave me the chance to experiment with different processes before evolving to precious metals. such as silver and gold.

The Cuff bracelet above uses mild steel as the base metal. I fold formed it and textured it before adding 22K gold. The results are so dramatic. I am only now working in this process and LOVE IT.

Designing cuffs is a learning experience. Early on, I had many mishaps.. melting the metal, not getting the stone to fit the bezel and lots more. That being said, I got better and better as I continued to experiment with new processes. Today the cuff is a mainstay in my collections. And as always.. each one is one of a kind and handmade in my Arizona studio.

This final image below highlights a process called fusing. I start with a fine silver base and fuse lots of fine and sterling silver components to the base. In fact I have an entire collection centered around this process. My Dare to Dream Collection.

That’s the inspiration behind the Enchanted Woodland Jewelry Collection, designed with the stunning Red Creek Jasper gemstone.

Here’s a closer look at the collection I designed, the story behind it, and why these handcrafted pieces are one-of-a-kind treasures.

The Gem Behind the Magic: Red Creek Jasper

The heart of the Enchanted Woodland Collection is Red Creek Jasper, a gemstone discovered about a decade ago in northwest China. While searching for turquoise, miners stumbled upon this unexpectedly beautiful stone. Unlike turquoise, Red Creek Jasper offers earthy hues that feel like a walk through a serene woodland. I personally discovered this gem several years ago while attending the JOGS Jewelry Show in Tucson, Arizona. I was amazed at the range of deep earthy colors that these gems display. In particular I am drawn to the caramel and merlot shades but the deep forest greens are beautiful as well.

What makes this Jasper special? Its colors. Think of warm bricks, deep reds, hunter greens, and buttery caramels, all swirling together like nature painted them herself. Every piece of this gemstone is entirely unique because no two stones are alike. This natural variety adds a layer of exclusivity to each jewelry design.

Why It’s Called “Enchanted Woodland”

The name “Enchanted Woodland” wasn’t chosen by accident. The colors of Red Creek Jasper instantly evoke images of a magical forest. So Picture a warm sunlight filtering through the trees, highlighting mossy rocks and an elf peeking out from behind a shrub. It’s that kind of whimsical natural beauty that inspired the designs in this collection.

My idea is simple: create jewelry that connects you, the wearer to the spirit of the wilderness and its wonder.

A Few Details About Red Creek Jasper

Red Creek Jasper belongs to the Jasper family, itself part of the Chalcedony group of minerals. But unlike most Jaspers that are known for their durability, Red Creek Jasper is more brittle. This fragility is stabilized during the jewelry-making process by adding resins, ensuring its durability while maintaining its natural charm. The result? Beautiful, long-lasting designs you can enjoy every day without worry.

When I am creating new designs it is vital that the finished piece will stand the test of time. The majority of my designs are meant to be worn now and then passed along to a future generation. Creating heirloom jewelry is part of the joy I experience knowing my designs are timeless.

Join with me as we learn more about this gorgeous blue/green gem. I want to share some of it’s history and origins.

Turquoise is one of the most iconic and cherished gemstones. Its striking blue and green hues have captivated people for centuries, earning it a special place in cultures around the world. As a jewelry designer based in Arizona, I’ve worked extensively with turquoise. While turquoise is found in several parts of the world, I choose to work with turquoise gems mined in Arizona, Nevada, California and Mexico. Let me take you on a journey to explore its fascinating history, origins, uses, and why it continues to shine in jewelry today.

Where Does Turquoise Get Its Name?

Did you know that the word “turquoise” means “Turkish stone”? While it’s tempting to assume this gemstone comes from Turkey, that’s not exactly the case. The original turquoise stones came from Persia, now modern-day Iran. Centuries ago, Turkish traders brought these exquisite stones into Europe, selling them in markets and bazaars. Over time, Europeans started calling these gems “Turkish stones” due to their connection with the traders, and the name stuck.

Today, turquoise is mined in various parts of the world, including the southwestern United States, northern Mexico, China, and Iran. Major mining areas in the U.S. include Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado. Though some mines still produce turquoise, many of the richest sources have been depleted.

A Southwest Treasure

Sonoran Turquoise and Sterling Silver Earrings

Arizona is particularly synonymous with turquoise, largely because of its cultural significance and history. One of the most famous sources here is the Sleeping Beauty Mine. Sleeping Beauty turquoise is prized for its smooth, solid blue color with minimal veining or matrix. the Cuff bracelet shown at the top of this blog features Sleeping Beauty turquoise.

On the other hand, turquoise from other regions feature unique patterns and inclusions. For example, stones with “spider web” veining are characteristic of turquoise mined in Nevada. Even areas like Bisbee in northern Arizona have their distinct styles, offering a wide variety of looks for collectors and jewelry lovers alike.

From Rough Stone to Cabochon

Before turquoise becomes part of a stunning piece of jewelry, it starts as rough stone, often raw and irregular. To make it usable, the stone is shaped into cabochons, which are polished gemstones with flat bottoms. The flat base makes it easier to set them into jewelry designs, ranging from rings to necklaces to cuffs.

Personally, I’ve been fortunate to work with some high-quality turquoise sourced decades ago. A gentleman I knew had access to turquoise mined from Arizona in the 1950s and 1960s. These stones were transformed into cabochons, and when he retired, I had the privilege of purchasing his collection. Today, these materials are part of my handcrafted designs, keeping their story alive.

Turquoise in Native American Culture

Turquoise holds deep meaning in Native American traditions. Many tribes used it for adornments, tools, and ceremonial purposes. For instance, the Apache believed turquoise brought good fortune. They even embedded small turquoise chips onto their bows, hoping this would make their arrows fly straighter and hit their targets.

Turquoise was often paired with coral, another material steeped in cultural significance. Since coral isn’t native to the Southwest, it’s believed that early Native Americans traded with coastal tribes to obtain it. The striking red coral combined with turquoise creates a bold and timeless contrast, a pairing that’s still popular in jewelry today.

The Versatility of Turquoise in Jewelry Design

‘Golden Steel’ Nevada Turquoise pendant

One of turquoise most attractive qualities is how versatile it is. You might think turquoise only pairs well with traditional silver, but its beauty shines alongside many metals and gemstones.

Turquoise and Sterling Silver: Sterling silver enhances turquoise vibrant hues, creating timeless elegance.
Turquoise and Copper: Copper’s warm tone makes turquoise pop, adding a rustic, earthy charm.
Turquoise and Ruby: The vivid blue of turquoise and the rich red of ruby create a dramatic and unforgettable pairing.
Turquoise and Amethyst: Who says opposites don’t attract? The cool blue of turquoise complements the deep purple of amethyst beautifully.

Turquoise and Gold. Two rich companions creating a spectacular

Beyond these combinations, turquoise works well with a variety of gemstones, making it a go-to choice for custom designs.

Turquoise carries centuries of history and cultural significance. It connects us to ancient civilizations, trade routes, and traditions. From its use in Native American ceremonies to its European trade origins, every piece of turquoise has a story.

For collectors and jewelry enthusiasts, turquoise is more than a gemstone—it’s a conversation starter. Whether it’s a cabochon set in silver or a bold cuff paired with copper, turquoise brings artistry and history together in every piece.

Looking Ahead

This is just the beginning of what there is to know about turquoise. From how to identify real stones to understanding the factors behind its color variations, there’s much more to uncover. Stay tuned for future posts where I’ll dive deeper into these topics, including how to care for your turquoise jewelry.

Until then, if you’re as smitten with turquoise as I am, explore your local shops, online creations, or even vintage collections. You just might find a piece that tells a story you’ll cherish forever.

Historical Significance of Carnelian

Earrings Featuring Carnelian Druzy Gems from Indonesia

Ancient Egypt

In ancient Egypt, carnelian was a symbol of life and protection. Egyptians crafted carnelian into stunning jewelry and amulets, associating its vibrant color with blood and power. It was often placed in tombs as a guide for the dead in the afterlife. The stone was closely associated with the goddess Isis, the protector of the dead and the giver of life.

Mesopotamia

Traveling across to Mesopotamia, carnelian played a pivotal role in the creation of seals, which were used to sign documents and act as a mark of authenticity. The Mesopotamians believed that carnelian seals could prevent misfortune and bring good luck. Additionally, carnelian was traded extensively.

India and Carnelian in Art

Indian artisans used carnelian to create intricate carvings and beads, showcasing their incredible skill and creativity. The stone was often shaped into beads for necklaces and bracelets, emphasizing its aesthetic and spiritual allure. In Indian culture, carnelian was also believed to provide protection and courage, adding an extra layer of meaning to its artistic use.

Roman and Greek Usage

In Roman and Ancient Greece carnelian was thought to have protective properties that warded off evil and brought good fortune. Signet rings, often carved from carnelian, allowed the wearer to imprint their mark on wax seals. For these ancients, carnelian was a gem of both beauty and belief.

Physical Properties of Carnelian

Carnelian and Druzy Pendant

Carnelian belongs to the chalcedony family, which is part of the quartz group. Its chemical formula is primarily silicon dioxide (SiO₂). What sets carnelian apart from other chalcedony stones is the presence of iron oxide impurities. These impurities not only color the stone but also influence its overall look and feel. Many other gems from the quartz family feature bands or swirls. Carnelian is primarily more solid, except in the instances where it is combined with other gems like druzy. I tend to work with the Carnelia gems I source from Indonesia. They provide a more unusual gem for my designs.

Color Variations

Why do carnelians vary in color? Their hues range from light orange to deep red, depending on the amount of iron oxide present. More iron oxide means deeper reds, while less results in lighter oranges or yellows. Ever notice that some carnelians have a cloudy appearance? That’s due to iron particles not fully dissolved during formation, creating unique patterns. Another gem you may have heard of is SARD. This is actually carnelian with darker hues. Sardonyx is a quartz gem that is a compilation of onyx and carnelian

The array of colors can be summarized as follows:

Pale Orange: Minimal iron content.

Medium Orange: Balanced iron levels.

Deep Red: High concentration of iron oxide.

This spectrum of colors allows designers to create varied and visually striking jewelry.

Hardness and Durability

On the Mohs hardness scale, carnelian scores a 7. This means it’s pretty tough, capable of enduring everyday wear and tear. It’s this robustness that makes carnelian an excellent choice for multiple types of jewelry, from rings and pendants to bracelets and brooches. Ever wonder why some stones look brand new after years of use? It’s because of their hardness, and carnelian is no exception. Its resilience allows it to resist scratches and maintain its beauty over time.

So, when considering carnelian for your next piece of jewelry, know that it’s not just its beauty that appeals but its ability to withstand the test of time as well.

Newest update using carnelian gems

My experience with Carnelian.

This gem is especially fun to work with. It’s hardness makes it great for my cuff or ring designs, too. Plus the brilliant orange color complements so many of my other gemstones. I love combining it with moonstone, onyx, turquoise and malachite. I find new combinations constantly. that being said, carnelian as a stand-alone gem is very popular with my customers. Each of my designs is one of a kind. I love knowing that the design you choose to purchase from me is the only one of it’s kind.

Spiritual and Healing Properties

Carnelian, often referred to as the “artist’s stone,” is famous for its spiritual and healing properties. It’s believed to ignite creativity and bring a burst of motivation. Do you sometimes feel stuck or uninspired? Many turn to carnelian to kickstart their creative juices.

In the realm of healing, carnelian is linked with the root and sacral chakras, which are all about grounding and passion. It’s thought to:

Boost Confidence: Helping individuals to speak their truth without fear.

Enhance Energy Levels: Acting like a shot of espresso for the soul to keep you going through life’s marathon.

Promote Courage: Enabling people to take bold steps and embrace change.

Carnelian is more than just a fashion statement or a historical curiosity. It’s a vibrant, versatile gem that’s weaving through modern life, capturing the interests of both jewelry fans and spiritual seekers alike. Does it make you curious about the stories each stone holds? That’s the allure of carnelian—past and present coming together in harmony.

Caring for Carnelian

Imagine owning a beautiful piece of carnelian jewelry, its deep red hues shining brightly. But how do you keep it looking brand new? Caring for carnelian might seem tricky, but with the right steps, it’s simpler than you might think.

It is best to keep carnelian out of the sun for long periods. It is not as susceptible as some other gems, but play on the safe side, please. Take care not to wear carnelian OR any of your gems while swimming.

Storage Tips

Follow these guidelines to keep your design fresh for years.

Separate Compartments: Store carnelian pieces separately or in soft-lined compartments. This prevents them from rubbing against harder stones or metals, which can cause scratches.

Fabric Pouches: Use fabric pouches to protect your stones. Not only do these keep them safe, but they also make it easy to carry them wherever you go.

Cool, Dry Places: Keep your carnelian away from direct sunlight and moisture, which can affect its color and structure over time.

Conclusion

Culturally, carnelian has represented courage, creativity, and transformation across various civilizations. Its role in rituals and adornments underscores its enduring appeal.

Consider adding a carnelian piece to your collection. Its allure continues to captivate, bridging past and present with its timeless glow.
Druzy quartz isn’t just another gemstone; it’s a sparkling wonder that has captured the hearts of many. The shimmering surface, covered in tiny crystals, makes it a unique and eye-catching choice in the world of jewelry. But this dazzling stone isn’t just about beauty. It’s also revered in metaphysical circles for its supposed healing properties and positive energy. I love the uniqueness of this gem. Virtually every specimen or cabochon is one of a kind. Isn’t is great knowing that the druzy design you purchase will not be seen anywhere else?

What Exactly is a Druzy Gem?

These gemstones features a natural surface texture much like fine sugar crystals. They are formed over millions of year when air pockets get trapped in rock leaving a hollow space once the rock cools. Primarily we find this phenomena in quartz crystals. However other gems experience a similar process and can include druzy in the stone.

In Jewelry Making

This is where I have the most expertise.. since I am a jeweler. I discovered these gems early in my career and to this day still prefer them as one of my GO-TO designs. Not only have I designed using the Druzy gem as the focal point of the piece, but I also love using the smaller druzy components to complement another gem I am obsessing about at the time. See below for a few reasons that these gems are so popular.

Appeal: Druzy quartz comes in a variety of colors and can be cut into different shapes, making it perfect for customized jewelry.

Durability: Despite its delicate look, druzy quartz is quite tough, making it ideal for various jewelry pieces.

Affordability: It’s often more affordable than other gemstones.. a win-win solution to adorning your body.

Metaphysical Properties

Druzy quartz isn’t just admired for its looks. Many believe it holds metaphysical and healing properties. For centuries, people have turned to druzy quartz for its supposed benefits:

Energy Amplification: It’s believed to amplify the body’s natural healing properties.

Spiritual Connection: Many think it helps to bridge the gap between physical and spiritual realms.

Stress Relief: Those who practice meditation often use Druzy quartz to aid relaxation and reduce stress.

How to Care for Druzy Quartz

Druzy quartz dazzles with its array of tiny crystals, and just like any gem, it deserves proper care to maintain its sparkle. Caring for druzy quartz involves gentle cleaning and mindful storage to preserve its beauty and brilliance.

Cleaning Tips to keep your design beautiful.

Use Mild Soap and Water: Mix a few drops of mild, unscented dish soap in a bowl of lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals or jewelry cleaners, as they can damage the delicate crystals. Gently soak the druzy quartz for a few minutes.

Brush with Care: Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush or a makeup brush, to gently scrub the surface. Be cautious with pressure to avoid detaching any crystals.

Rinse Thoroughly: After scrubbing, rinse the quartz with clean water to remove any soapy residue.

Pat Dry: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to pat the druzy quartz dry. Avoid rubbing to prevent scratching the surface.

Storing Suggestions

Proper storage is essential to keep your druzy quartz safe from damage or dullness. Here are a few recommendations for storing your druzy quartz:

Separate Storage: Store druzy quartz pieces separately from other jewelry to prevent scratches and damage. Use individual pouches or soft-lined compartments.

Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade the colors of druzy quartz. Keep it in a shaded area or a jewelry box.

Control Humidity: Moisture can damage the crystals over time. Store your druzy quartz in a dry place, and consider using silica gel packets to control humidity.

Taking the time to care for your druzy quartz ensures it remains as stunning as the day you acquired it. Whether you’re cleaning or storing, gentle treatment and mindful precautions can keep this sparkling gem in perfect condition for years to come.

Visual Indicators

Real druzy quartz has distinct characteristics that set it apart from fakes. Here are some visual clues to help you identify authentic druzy quartz:

Crystal Clusters: Genuine druzy quartz features tightly packed clusters of tiny crystals. These crystals often sparkle like a fistful of tiny diamonds as the viewing angle changes with movement.

Luster and Shine: Authentic druzy quartz maintains a consistent luster and shine across its surface. Imitations may appear dull or have uneven shimmer.

Natural Imperfections: Look for natural imperfections or inclusions within the crystals. These can be air bubbles, tiny cracks, or other small flaws that indicate natural formation.

Color Variations: Real druzy quartz can come in various colors, but the hues are usually more subtle and less vibrant than overly saturated, synthetic counterparts.

Hello! I’m Alene, a jewelry designer with a passion for gemstones. Based in Arizona, my studio constantly showcases a variety of stunning stones, including some you may have never heard of before. Today, let’s dive into the captivating world of Howlite.

What is Howlite?

Howlite is a mesmerizing white gemstone with striking black veins that run through its surface. This stone can be found in slab form, often cut to create beautiful cabochons. Depending on how a lapidary artist cuts the stone, the result can emphasize either the pristine white parts or the intricate black veins, showcasing the stone’s unique beauty.

Originally discovered in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Howlite can now be found in various locations around the globe. It is an economical gemstone, not cheap, but reasonably priced, making it accessible for many. I do love the simplicity and beauty of this black and white gem.

The Deceptive Practice: Howlite vs. Turquoise

One reason you may not have heard of Howlite is its frequent misidentification. Due to its affordability and appearance, Howlite is often dyed to resemble the more expensive turquoise. When Howlite is dyed blue, the black veins mirror those found in natural turquoise, causing confusion among buyers. I feel sad that this beautiful gem is not given it’s due. In addition, those who purchase the dyed version mistakenly feel they own the more rare form of turquoise. What a shame. Here are a few tips to help you avoid making that error.

Tips for Turquoise Buyers

Purchase from reputable sources: Ensure that the seller is trusted and can guarantee that the turquoise is natural.

Check for authenticity: Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. Genuine turquoise will often be higher in price due to its rarity and beauty.

The Natural Beauty of Howlite

Despite its common counterfeiting, Howlite in its natural state is incredibly beautiful. Its calming white color juxtaposed with black veins makes it a stunning addition to any piece of jewelry. Whether paired with vibrant gems or classic stones like onyx, Howlite stands out with elegance.

Howlite in the Rough. Isn’t it stunning?

Howlite and Onyx: A Perfect Pairing

When combined with black onyx, Howlite’s beauty is significantly enhanced. The contrast between the pure white stone and the deep black onyx creates a visually striking piece that is sure to catch the eye.

I also love pairing this gem with more bold and vibrant gems like rich deep orange Carnelian or luscious purple amethyst.

Benefits and Significance of Howlite
