My design journey began in 2008. I took several metals classes and knew I was hooked forever! This design is my very first attempt at fusing metals. I still love this necklace. I do need to give it a good cleaning but you get the idea.
Fast forward to today and I still use this process in many of my creations. I love that each design using this process is truly one of a kind. Even though I may decide on a design by adding the components before fusing… the process itself takes my concept one step further. As the silver melts into the background it moves where it wants to move. Some of the components are a lighter weight and they will melt faster. I am constantly amazed and delighted by the results!
Experimenting with different metals creates endless possibilities and keeps my interested and engaged.
Many of my designs are copper with sterling silver fused in. The combination of these two metals is mesmerizing. Added to this are the options to patina the copper with blues, greens, reds or black. What fun. Shown below is a copper and sterling design that includes Amethyst and Chrysoprase gems. Just in case you haven’t guessed by now.. I am also obsessed with Gems!
Right now I am working with steel and gold. Fusing gold into steel is even more exciting. The process is a little different as I need to use gold dust to have it melt as much as I want. The richness of the design though is worth it. Yes I do learn new processes and create endless designs that don’t include fusing, but this one concept is my first and the most enduring for me. Below you can see one of my gold and steel fused designs.
