The Heart shape is widely recognized as a symbol of love and compassion.
So how does this heart symbol emerge as the image to represent our life giving organ? First of all, some believe it is derived from the shape of Ivy leaves. Ivy is known as the leaf of fidelity. Finally another theory from the Ancient Greeks says that the symbol comes from the silphium seed pod shape. Silphium was most famous as an early form of birth control!
Furthermore, this familiar heart symbol first appears in the 14th century in Documenti d’amore by Francesco Barberino
Ancient Egyptians believed that the heart was the giver of life. Before mankind knew that the heart pumps blood through the circulatory system, they observed that the heart beats faster when someone is excited… and so concluded that the heart was indeed the center of our feelings.

I love creating jewelry designs using heart symbols. They remind me daily to Speak and Live ‘from the heart.’ In this way we show our true self to those around us. All my jewelry designs can be found here
Do you have any fascinating Heart Facts to share? Add them in the comments and I will put you in the drawing for a $40.00 gift certificate to my web site!

The heart is especially relevant to me as I have a heart condition called Micro Vessel Disease. It’s not well known, but I feel an affinity to heart themed designs since my own heart makes me well aware of it quite a bit.
Here’s a “heartifact” for you. Most people put their hands on the left side when they place their hands over their hearts. But really, it should go right in the middle of our chests, between the lungs if we’re being anatomically correct.
alenegeed says
Jennifer. Thanks for your heart fact. You are entered in the drawing! Sorry to hear about your condition. It sounds like you have learned how to manage it.

I love heart shaped necklaces. Helping people find love is my industry so it is but natural for me to be attracted to them. When there is a matchmaker’s and dating coaches conference, I often get amused as you never know in what fashion will a heart shape show up. I have seen earrings, dresses, shoes and more.
alenegeed says
Thanks Lori. Have to admit that I have never seen heart shaped shoes though ?

Lovely jewelry! Fun fact from our farm… the first llama I got is Heartsong. As a musician, her name seems extra special. I used her name in much of my branding.

I Love your Fun fact. And that you have llamas! I took a daytrip with llamas several years ago. Outside of Tucson. They are so fascinating
Jeanie says
I Googled “heart shape” and Wikipedia said that it may also be derived from stylized depictions of features of the human female body. I always thought it looked like the upper lip which of course we use for kissing.
alenegeed says
Great fun fact. Makes sense?
