The heart symbolizes compassion, love and commitment. The shape we use for heart designs is not the true shape of our human heart. That being said, this stylized shape represents the heart and has for centuries. Some indicate that it’s simple lines and form make it easy to visualize.
Legends surround the heart
Egyptians believed that the heart is the giver of life. Ancients observed that the heart beats faster when someone is excited and concluded that the heart is indeed the center of our feelings.
Another theory suggests that the heart symbol is probably shaped according to the writings of Galen and Aristotle. These ancient philosophers described the human heart as an organ with three chambers and a dent in the middle.
The earliest heart shaped symbol might have actually represented the seed pod of the silphium plant, which was used as contraception in ancient Libya.
Jewelry Designs and the Heart
Love and romance are symbolized in heart shapes throughout the world. I love using this meaningful design whenever I can. If able I find heart shaped gemstones to work with. The image at the top of this post features a heart shaped petrified palmwood root gem. The image below features textured sterling hearts and deep purple amethyst gems. I adore the way these hang so delicately from an ear lobe.
