An Icon We See Everywhere

Think of the heart shape. It’s everywhere—on greeting cards, emojis, and signs of love. But this simple image has a rich backstory that stretches back thousands of years. The heart as a symbol means more than just romance; it stands for emotion, spirit, and connection across many cultures.

I am drawn to the heart shape and use it in many of my jewelry designs. Of course the symbolism is part of the reason I love designing this way.

In this post, you’ll see how the heart shape took on new forms over time, why it matters, and what its story reveals about human culture.

Ancient Origins of Heart Imagery

Archaeologists have uncovered some fascinating traces of the heart in the ancient world:

Mesopotamia: Clay tablets from Sumer and Akkad show heart-shaped objects and script. Often, these images connect the heart to thought and wisdom instead of just the body.

Egypt: The heart had a starring role in Egyptian life and afterlife beliefs. Tomb art shows the heart being weighed against the feather of Ma’at, to test a person’s goodness.

Greece: Classical Greeks often sketched organs in detailed medical texts. The philosopher Aristotle saw the heart as the center of emotion, intelligence, and even courage. Heart images appear on ancient pottery and scrolls.

The Earring design below shows heart shaped malachite gems dangling from a copper hoop.

Malachite earrings done in Malachite, Sterling and Copper

Symbolic Meanings in Early Civilizations

To ancient people, the heart was much more than a part of the body. It carried rich symbolism:

Life and Vitality: The heart was seen as the spark of life. Without it, nothing moved or breathed.

The Soul and Identity: Egyptians believed the heart held a person’s soul, memories, and truth. In the afterlife, the heart acted like a record of your entire life—nothing escaped its memory.

Feelings and Spirit: The Greeks linked the heart to strong emotions. Love, grief, fear, and joy all flowed from the heart’s core.

Judgment and Morality: In ancient Egypt, the heart was weighed in the underworld. A heavy heart meant guilt and led to punishment. A light heart pointed to honesty and peace.

The Emergence of the Stylized Heart Shape in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, the heart shape took a new direction in art and culture. Instead of showing the human heart as a realistic organ, artists started drawing it as two rounded arches meeting at a sharp point. This is the same shape that later became a global symbol of love. The shift wasn’t only about art—it reflected new beliefs, social customs, and ways of seeing emotion.

Medieval Manuscripts and Religious Contexts

Medieval Europe brought a boom in decorated manuscripts and church art. Monks and scribes filled the margins of books with bright images, including the earliest recognizable heart shapes. These hearts often appeared in:

Illuminated Manuscripts: You can spot small heart shapes in the borders of prayer books or around saints and angels. The design stood out against the gold leaf and deep blues of the pages.

Religious Texts: Writers used the heart as a sign of true faith or divine love. For example, images sometimes showed saints holding stylized hearts, meant to represent their love for God or their pure intentions.

Church Decorations: Artists carved heart shapes into wood, painted them on altars, or added them to stained glass. In some stories, Jesus was shown pointing to his heart, calling attention to his compassion and suffering.

The heart shape didn’t just pop up by accident. Some historians say it may have been inspired by ancient plants or seeds, such as the silphium pod, which was shaped like a heart and connected to love and affection. The image above features the silphium pod. You can easily see how the upside down image of this pod mimics our modern day concept of the heart.

Modern Evolution of Heart Images

Heart images have taken on a new life in the last century, sweeping through pop culture and digital spaces at a pace no one could have predicted. They are no longer reserved for art and religion—now, hearts show up in slogans, billboards, text messages, and social posts worldwide. Let’s look at the key shifts that led to this, from paper cards to pixelated symbols.

The design below features another way I design using the heart motif. The fine silver backing is heart shaped and features a teardrop shaped turquoise gem.

Heart Designed Pendant from the Dare to Dream collection

Valentine’s Day and Mass Media: The Rise of the Heart in Pop Culture

With the boom of printing in the 19th and 20th centuries, the stylized heart started showing up everywhere. Nowhere is this more obvious than on Valentine’s Day cards, which took the simple heart shape and turned it into a sign of romance.

Why did this happen? Commercial printing made it cheap and easy to send messages of love. Heart images went from elite artworks to everyday objects you could buy at a corner store. By the early 1900s, heart-covered cards, candy boxes, and decorations took over store shelves each February.

Mass media only boosted this trend:

Advertising: Brands used hearts to connect a product with warmth, safety, or affection. Think of classic candy boxes, soda ads, or jewelry campaigns—the heart makes you feel an emotion before you read a single word.

Movies and TV: Scripted love stories splashed the heart symbol across posters and film reels. When a cartoon character’s eyes turned into hearts, kids and adults alike understood: love, in its silliest or purest form.

Pop Music and Art: Album covers, posters, and fashion added even bolder heart imagery. From punk rock pins to pop diva stage sets, the heart became a sign of emotion, rebellion, or joy.

The Digital Heart: From Emoji to Memes

In the last two decades, the heart image has exploded across digital screens in ways that old-school marketers could only dream about. It’s now one of the most recognized symbols on Earth—thanks to social platforms, messaging apps, and the ever-growing emoji lineup.

Here’s how digital life shaped the heart:

Emoji Hearts: The red heart emoji was added to phones and computers in the 2010s. It’s now used in billions of texts and posts every day. A single tap sends warmth or friendship across the globe—faster than a handwritten letter ever could.

Color Variations: Different colored hearts let people show subtle feelings or inside jokes. For example:

Red for love or strong emotion

Yellow for friendship or happiness

Blue for trust or calm vibes

Black for sadness, style, or dry humor

Heart Reactions: Social platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok made the heart a way to show approval. People “like” with a heart instead of a thumbs up, sending instant feedback and positive vibes.

Conclusion

The heart image has moved through history as both a mirror and a messenger—shifting its shape and meaning as people changed the way they loved, believed, and expressed themselves. From ancient carvings loaded with spiritual weight, to the decorative hearts in medieval stories, right up to today’s emoji-laden texts, this simple symbol still carries deep emotions. I expect this is why I tend to gravitate towards this icon in my designs. To me the heart means LOVE.

Working with copper is how I began my jewelry design business. At first I used it because the cost was less and it allowed me to experiment with new methods and designs before working with silver or gold. I found that I LOVE the material. Many of my designs are a compilation of silver and copper. A few even feature copper, gold and even steel! This blog shows you many of my designs… but first a little history.

Before we embark on our historical journey, let me introduce you to malachite. This gemstone, with its mesmerizing green hues, is often found in its raw form, directly extracted from the mines. The piece I’m showcasing today, a gorgeous faceted malachite ring from my Sacred Spiral collection has been carefully treated transforming it into the perfect jewelry design without losing its natural allure. Coupled with an emerald, the vibrant greens of malachite create a stunning visual symphony, a testament to its beauty and versatility.

I really adore working with this gem! in my humble opinion, the vibrant green hues are unmatched by any other gem. Not only is this gem perfect as a stand alone design, but it complements other gems such as moonstone, druzy quartz and amber.

Stop by my online shop and view all the Malachite designs currently available. Keep in mind that each design is created by me in my Arizona Studio. And each is a one of a kind jewelry piece.

A Glimpse into Ancient Egypt

Our journey begins in ancient Egypt, a civilization that not only admired malachite but also integrated it into their daily lives and spiritual practices. The Egyptians were known to grind malachite into a fine powder to use as eye makeup. Malachite adorned both men and women with its vibrant green, symbolizing both beauty and protection. Moreover, Pharaohs embedded malachite into their headdresses, believing it elevated them to a higher vibration, enabling them to discern truth from falsehood in counsel. This profound connection with malachite was also intertwined with mythology, with tales of a sky goddess who adored the stone, claiming that it was formed from stars that fell to Earth.

The Roman Connection: Malachite and Juno

As we traverse through time to ancient Rome, we find malachite revered in a different light. Here, it was known as the “peacock stone,” largely due to its association with Juno, the Roman goddess who had a particular fondness for peacocks. The swirling patterns and rounded shapes within malachite mirrored the eye-catching feathers of a peacock, enchanting the Romans. They believed in the protective power of malachite, fashioning amulets for children and placing them in cribs to safeguard the newborns.

Malachite in the Heart of Russia

Our final destination takes us to Russia, where malachite was not only cherished as a gemstone but also utilized in grand architectural designs. The Winter Palace and St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg stand as testaments to the Russian fascination with malachite. The Winter Palace boasts a salon adorned with malachite columns and fireplaces. St. Isaac’s Cathedral features an entire room dedicated to this splendid stone. Beyond its decorative uses, Russian legend held that drinking from a malachite chalice could grant the ability to understand the language of animals, weaving a magical connection with nature.

Conclusion: The Timeless Allure of Malachite

Now we conclude our journey through the colorful history of malachite. It’s clear that this gemstone is more than just a piece of jewelry. From the ancient Egyptians and Romans to the opulence of Russian architecture, malachite has woven its way through various cultures, leaving a mark of beauty, protection, and mystique. Its vibrant green hues and intricate patterns captures our imagination, making it a treasured gem in the modern world. Whether adorned as a piece of jewelry or marveling at its historical significance, the allure of malachite remains as captivating as ever.

Thank you for joining me on this enchanting journey through the legends and lore of malachite. If the stories of this beautiful gemstone have sparked your interest, stay tuned for more explorations into the fascinating world of gemstones, jewelry care, and design tips.

My bead collection is a vital part of my design business. Over these many years I have purchased a variety of gems. In the early years I bought whatever was bright and beautiful and did not give much thought to the type of gem, the quality of the gem or the origin of the gems. Let’s just say I have learned a LOT over the past years. Most of the those early finds are long gone. Now When I attend the gem shows, or search product online, I am more discerning. Like any other business person, I learn from my earlier errors!

Natural Turquoise and Amethyst Collection

The image above shows you my current beads of natural turquoise and amethyst. These are two of my favorite gems to work with. The turquoise is all natural and most of it is from the Sonoran mines in Mexico. I still hang on to a few of the turquoise chips and believe they are from a Chinese mine.

Amethyst beads are labeled as AA, A or B grade quality. Many of mine shown in the image are AA grade. the rest are A grade. The main difference in the quality is the deep color and the clarity. Each of my designs is created to be worn for many years and then passed down to future generations. So I want the best quality gems that will withstand the wear and time.

Other gemstone beads in my collection

I should mention that this box of amethyst and turquoise has companion boxes of other types of beads.

Overall I have 6 such cases comprised of malachite, peridot, azurite, tiger eye, red creek jasper, picture jasper, rhodochrosite, moonstone, rose quartz, coral, amber and cultured pearls.

One whole case is filled with onyx and hematite. I think I might have overdone the purchasing of these particular gems! Many of the hematite gems are heart shaped and are just waiting for my inspiration on how to design with them.

I forgot to mention amber! About a year ago I got the chance to purchase some free-form Baltic amber beads. Not one to pass up on such an opportunity, I now have several hundred amber beads! By now you might wonder if I am obsessed with gems. I am proud to admit that you are right.

Some days I wonder if all these are necessary. Then I will be working on a design and realize that I have so many options to create the perfect pair of earrings or ring. It is all worth it!

Cabochons are for another post

Most of my work uses cabochons in the design process. These are flat backed gems that require a bezel to adhere them to metal. This collection is enormous. Perhaps a future blog will highlight these gems. Stay Tuned!

Have you ever spent a lazy afternoon gazing at the clouds on a sunny day…picking out shapes, naming them, dreaming, and having fun? This is the spirit that inspired me to create my CLOUD DREAMS collection.

Finding the Gem

The stones (from Indonesia) are White Plume Agate. I discovered this gem quite by accident. Over the last year I have been purchasing many of my cabochons from 2 Indonesian sellers. Traditionally these sellers send me a gift with each order. The gift is normally another cabochon from one of their collections. The gift acts as a thank you for my order while also giving me ideas for new gems I may want to buy in the future.

This particular gift was a white plume agate gem. The stone cutter adds a blue backing to create this beautiful doublet as they commonly are referred to.

Creating the Collection

During the next several months I began ordering more of these doublets. I already knew this gem would be the key component in a new collection. The first several pieces are now available for purchase here.

I adore the way the sky comes alive with this process. Each of these designs is handmade in my Arizona Studio and one of a kind.

Let these designs remind you of lazy days and dreaming.

Follow me on my design journey and become a collector. Not only do my collectors receive first look at my newest designs but the also have the advantage of Collector-only discounts and specials. It’s Free. In addition you Get 15% off your first order.

If you are in the jewelry business then you know how important this scale is. we use this tool to identify hardness of minerals.

First a little history:

Carl Friedrich Christian Mohs was a German geologist AND mineralogist. In 1822 he created the Mohs scale. He determined that you could tell which minerals were harder based upon the scratch test. Using several harder materials to perform the tests he was able to rank minerals according to their hardness. As a result this 200 year old scale is used industry wide today.

Not only are minerals numbered one to ten, but also they are not evenly spaced. For example quartz, which is a SEVEN is actually 100 times harder than talc. A diamond which is a TEN is actually 1500 times harder than talc.

Keep in mind that these 10 minerals were chosen for the scale. As new minerals are mined and discovered they use this scale to determine the hardness.

What scratch tools are used?

We use a fingernail for the basic scratch. If it leaves a mark on the mineral then this mineral (talc) is considered a ONE on the scale. Moving up the scale we use a copper penny, a knife, steel nail and a drill bit. In the case of quartz (which we use widely in jewelry design) it can only be scratched with a steel nail. This makes quartz a SEVEN on the hardness scale. SEVEN is a durable hardness and can be used in rings or cuffs as well as earrings and pendants. The hardest mineral (number TEN on the scale) is diamond! Even a drill bit has trouble scratching the surface. Look at the chart above to get the full details.

Follow me on my design journey and become a collector. Not only do my collectors receive first look at my newest designs but the also have the advantage of Collector-only discounts and specials. It’s Free. And you Get 15% off your first order.

Where do you get your ideas?

Ocotillo Cactus in bloom

this is my favorite question! The answer is everywhere! Pictured above is an ocotillo cactus in bloom. When I first moved here from the Midwest I was drawn to this particular plant. I love the graceful way the branches seem to reach out towards the sky. The gorgeous orange blossoms just enhance it’s beauty. If you have been following me for some time, you will notice that I use graceful dangles in many of my designs. Yes I got that concept from this very plant.

The vibrant colors in the Arizona sky and the red rocks of Sedona inspire me.

I tend to be drawn to deep oranges and caramel colors. Of course copper provides a lot of opportunities to create these hues. I learned early on that I can play with heat and some household liquids to create these deeper colors. I also tend to stock up and design with many gemstones that remind me of the gorgeous sunsets and Sedona landscape.

Architectural patterns and structures offer lots of ideas.

Often a pattern in a dress or scarf will get me to thinking about color combinations I want to experiment with. The lines and angles of some structures seem to call out to me. I love to experiment with different angles and folds in my designs.

As I alluded to at the start of this blog, I tend to find inspiration everywhere. In fact my main problem is narrowing down the ideas that spring into my head so I can actually move forward and focus on one design at a time.

Follow me on my design journey by becoming a collector. My collectors receive first look at my newest designs plus Collector-only discounts and specials. It’s Free. And you Get 15% off your first order.

Did you know that about 20% of my designs are custom created at the request of a customer? My customer wants a different size, a different gem, or even an altered design, based upon my aesthetic. I am happy to oblige. Over the years I have designed custom earrings, rings and pendants. I ask only that you as the customer, give me more time to complete the finished piece. Please allow me to work with gems I currently have in stock and with metals I have expertise with.

Isn’t this gem gorgeous? I agree. Except for the fact that is is NOT a gem or a stone. Goldstone is actually made from glass. An Italian from Venice (Vincenzo Miotti) had the exclusive license to create this stone. In addition to opaque glass, this gem has flecks of copper. That’s what gives it the sparkle you see here.

Goldstone gem in a 18K gold and steel setting

In the 17th century the Miotti family perfected the technique to create goldstone. They kept this formula a secret for 2 centuries! Finally in the 19th century, Italian glassmaker Pietro Bigaglia introduced it to the rest of the world.

I do love the beauty and sparkle of this stone. And since it is glass, it holds up to lots of treatments without damage. the vibrant colors blend so well with other gems as well. Below you can see it paired with a polychrome jasper gem from Madagascar.
